The context
In the context of promoting civil law, the Fondation’s goal is to create active partnerships with other legal systems within the same legal family. One of these means consists of supporting reinforcement of institutional exchanges between French and foreign members of the Fondation.
Since 2006, the Fondation has taken part in an annual colloquium on the convergence of French and German law. The first event was held in Paris in May 2006, the second in Berlin in 2007, and the third took place in Paris on December 9-10, 2008.
This event, originally tied to university gatherings in the two countries, was open to other legal professionals in 2008. Thus with university professors as well as business executives, legal professionals, and even two renowned French and German philosophers present, business law questions predominated in the discussions on the points of convergence within the two legal systems.
Following the colloquium, the papers were published as official records of the proceedings to map out concrete convergence trends in the two legal systems and, for example, help defend common positions in the context of negotiating European directives.
This action is a part of the institutional harmonization policy that the Fondation hopes to develop regarding German players who can share in international action programs.
The objective
To support establishment of long-terms links between representative French and German legal profession institutions.
Work toward convergence of the two legal systems to improve the legal business environment.
